Getting Ready For College - A Timeline and Checklist

** Please remember:  Throughout the entire process, you may initiate contact (via email, instant messenger, fax, phone and/or letters) as much as you want.  Phone message (except specific camp related questions) cannot be returned until July 1st of their rising senior year.**

First of all, it is important to recognize that there is no specific path you must take.  The college recruitment process can be different for every student-athlete.  Each school is unique in its own way, and every college coach handles the recruiting process differently.  Therefore, your experiences with different coaches and schools will change, and this inconsistency is the very factor that will help you choose the right school for you.

Some high school student-athletes don’t need to contemplate the plusses and minuses of different schools because they have already found a match.  Heavily recruited student-athletes are players who the coaching staff unquestionably wants as members of the team.  Some schools are allowed to offer athletic scholarships and academic scholarships to entice recruits.  For these fortunate high schoolers, the money from these scholarships can reduce the cost of college tuition.  As you can see, there are many different paths the recruitment process can take.

Despite the unpredictable nature of college recruitment, there are guidelines that will help prepare you for this exciting, yet somewhat intimidating, process.  The following sections suggest when you should begin certain stages of the recruitment process and how to communicate with college coaches.  In addition, these sections highlight important things to keep in mind that you may not consider, such as your future after collegiate soccer.

In conclusion, there is a section with valuable links to websites devoted to collegiate athletics and the recruitment process.  We hope that this information and the following recommendations will easy your nerves (and possibly your parents as well) about the college admissions and soccer recruitment process.

JSC College Selection Assistance
Each season the Jamestown Soccer Club put forth a program and schedule of events, including its college information night, one on one meeting with their head coach and technical director, league and state cup play, as well as attending several prominent showcase tournaments throughout the country in order to allow players the opportunity to display their talents for college coaches.

If you are one of our future graduates you need to have a profile. This can be done via your team using the profile pages that are a part of the JSC web site (email webmaster at jwatson@jamestownsoccerclub.com to find out more), or you can go about setting profiles up independently as a team.

The bulk of the responsibility for getting into college rests in this order, Player, Parents, and then Club. This is a collaborative effort and while the club provides a vehicle for a player to display their talents, it is the efforts of the Player that take the prominent role.

The optimum results occur when players along with parents take the lead in marketing themselves to colleges by directly expressing interest in a particular school through presentations, letters, emails, and phone calls to college coaches. Players must put thought into their correspondence with college coaches. With experience in the process the Club can advise players on content, however showing interest in a school is the first step to being recruited.

It is worth noting that coaches are inundated with inquiries of interest so short and concise content will be most effective. The objective is to inform the coach of interest, qualifications, and where and when they may have an opportunity to evaluate the player.
