Classic League Wrap Up (March 5-7)

92 Gold

U17 Premier

Fresh off a 1-0-1 opening weekend in Premier League action, the 92 Jammers Gold headed to Raleigh to face perennial power CASL Elite.  Last season Elite had edged the Jammers 2-1 in league action, and then beaten JSC convincingly in the State Cup by a 4-1 margin.  This time, however, the Jammers established control of the match early on - scoring 48 seconds into the match when Pierce Verchick fed Justin Jones down the left side to make it 1-0.   JSC would double the lead 12 minutes later when Andrew Daniel broke through the CASL defense and beat the keeper near post to make it 2-0.   A third goal, by Jose Valencia, was called back.  Goalkeeper Stephen Moffit logged 10 saves and maintained his season long streak of not allowing a goal.

The Jammers will take a week off from league play this weekend as they head up to the prestigious Jefferson Cup in Richmond for Friday/Saturday/Sunday matches.

U16 Premier

On Saturday, the Jammers traveled to Fuquay-Varina to face FVAA Red looking to stay unbeaten on the season.   The first half started with a physical undertone with the teams trading chances and possession though neither team was able to convert the chances into goals.  That changed midway through the second when FVAA converted a corner kick into a headed goal for a 1-0 advantage.  The hosts would double the margin five minutes later to take a 2-0 decision.

The next day the Jammers returned to the Raleigh area to face CASL Elite.  Early on the hosts established control, but JSC kept their opponent scoreless until half.  As the game wore on the Jammers began to establish control and seemed to be knocking on the door of their third league win.  However CASL broke the scoring drought in the 70th minute when a cross was put into the back of the next.  The Jammers would press, but couldn’t convert and ended up falling 1-0.

The Jammers are now 2-2-1 and return to action on Sunday March 21st at 5:30pm vs NMSC at Westchester Country Day School.

The 94 Jammers Gold faced two tough opponents on back to back days and managed to earn a point for their efforts.  The weekend started on Saturday against CASL Premier in Raleigh.  The hosts got off to a quick start with a goal in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead.  The Jammers would make some adjustments and begin pressing forward in the second half, earning the equalizer when Alex Lugo followed up a free kick and put the rebound away to make it 1-1.  Despite creating several more chances, the Jammers were unable to take more than a point.

Sunday the Jammers played their first home game against FVAA Red.  The Flash took a 1-0 lead early on a breakaway that was nearly turned away by JSC keeper Danny Gillespie, but managed to bounce in despite a deflection.  JSC would equalize before the half when Angel Valencia would one time a ball off a Mitchell Brown cross to make it 1-1.  The Jammers would fall behind 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining on some unlucky goals, but would score 45 seconds after the third when Brown hit a shot off a Hayden Appelberg assist to make it 3-2.  JSC couldn’t finish from there despite creating 8 shots on goal in the last 5 minutes.
