JSC Membership Survey Feedback Announced

Dear Members,

Following up on our member survey and the member feedback session, the JSC Committee committed to present the overall findings and to give everyone a look at our Strategic Initiatives by December. After your review, if you have any comments or further suggestions or you feel we need to change priorities, please email JSC Chairman Scott Behe at sbehe@triad.rr.com with that feedback. By the end of January we will post a tracking chart of our Strategic Initiatives on the website so the whole community may monitor our success. The sample chart is attached. It will be in a "Stop Light" format giving all members a simple, pictorial view of our progress. Explanations for each color of the stop light are at the top of the chart.

We are hard at work tackling the top three initiatives from the survey. Short term: Lighting JAC/improving practice facilities; Hiring a Director of Coaching (DOC). The DOC will focus on the soccer part of the club to help develop a well trained staff and to ensure that all kids are getting age and level appropriate training. Improve coaching: Creating a Coaching Forum to allow coaches more time to meet and discuss club philosophy and learn technical strengths of each other. This will provide opportunities for coaches to cross train other teams utilizing the various strengths of all of our coaches. This will lead tomore technical training for all teams also noted in the survey. We are also laying out our long range initiatives and they are shared as well.

Please review the attached draft, and send any feedback you have to Scott Behe at sbehe@triad.rr.com by the beginning of January so we may deliver the first working version by the end of January as we committed to. Also, please welcome the newest members to the JSC Committee, Denis Byrne and Larry Coplin.

We also want to thank you for being our valued parents and players. You are our "customer"! You are truly valued. You are why we are here and why we do what we do. Thank you and we wish you a VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON. Enjoy your family, your kids and hopefully a little time away from soccer. We’ll see you on the fields refreshed and ready to get after it and be great in 2011!!!

Go JAMMERS!!!

JSC Committee

Scott Behe, Nancy Groh, AJ Schott, Stuart Lennie, Geoff Snelgrove, Denis Byrne, and Larry Coplin.

JSC Shows Well At 2010 CASL Showcase

Each year the top collegiate recruiting event in North Carolina is the CASL Showcase series held in Raleigh. Teams from all over the country descend on the Triangle area for three days of high level games. This year Jamestown Soccer Club sent their 92 Gold, 92 Blue, and 93 Gold teams to compete in the event.

92 Jammers Gold

The 92 Gold team ended their CASL Showcase careers as they started it: undefeated. In their third consecutive year in the event the Jammers competed in the Elite bracket's Copa flight and came away with a 3-0 record on the weekend. On Friday the Jammers started strong against Georgia's Augusta Arsenal, a state semifinalists in last year's State Cup. JSC jumped out early when Andrew Moore's throw found Pierce Verchick in the box for a one time finish. Soon after, Verchick would strike again after Andrew Daniel beat two opponents in the midfield and found the streaking JSC striker for another finish, this time to the top left corner. The Arsenal would get one goal back, but wouldn't challenge again as the Jammers took home a 2-1 victory.

On Saturday the opponent was Suncoast Soccer Academy out of Florida. On this day the Jammers started sluggish, but managed to take a 1-0 lead on a very good individual effort by Moore in the first half to lead 1-0 at the break. JSC would double their lead midway through the second when Verchick (pictured right) again found the back of the net. The game would be put away when Verchick set up Evan Mobley for a one time shot inside the penalty area to leave the match 3-0. On Sunday the Jammers needed only a draw against Virginia Premier League side, Reston Rowdies to clinch the bracket. Down two starters due to injury, the Jammers once again seemed a bit sluggish, but managed to get a go-ahead goal early in the second half when Andrew Daniel made a penetrating run and slotted the ball past the keeper to give JSC a 1-0 victory.

At U18, this was the final time the Jammers will comepete at a CASL event. The 92 Gold team won the event in 2007, 2009, and 2010, posting a cumulative 10-0 record over those three years.

92 Jammers Blue

The 92 Blue team made a bit of club history before they kicked off their first game at the 2010 Showcase - being the first "Blue" team in JSC history to earn an invitation to the event and competing in the Premier bracket's Copa Flight. It wouldn't be easy as the recently promoted 1st Division side would face Premier league teams from North Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana.

The first match saw the Jammers playing with just 11 players due to scheduling conflicts. With a depleted roster, the Jammers fell behind 2-0 to Indianapolis (Ind.) F.C. JSC would cut the lead in half just after the second half kickoff, but the lack of depth eventually wore down the Jammers. The 92 Blue would continue to press, but couldn't find the back of the net to leave the game at 2-1. The second match of the event saw the Jammers facing Charlotte Soccer Academy's Predator team - the sixth ranked team in North Carolina. The Jammers started strong and had several chances throughout the match, but couldn't find the net in a 0-0 draw.

JSC had a chance to win their bracket on Sunday with a victory against Richmond (Va.) Magic. In an evenly matched game the Jammers found themselves on the wrong side of a controversial call near the end of the first half as the ball rebounded off the JSC defender stationed on the goal line beside the near post. The referee's assistant judged the entire ball crossed the line and awarded what would be the only goal of the match leaving the Jammers with a 0-2-1 record and giving the Magic a 2-0-1 record to win the bracket.

93 Jammers Gold

The 93 Gold team also made the trip to Raleigh, competing in the U17 boy's Premier bracket, Predator flight. The Jammers started the weekend - also shorthanded due to scheduling conflicts - on Friday losing to CASA Premier out of Pennsylvania East by a 3-1 margin. JSC would rebound the next day with a 1-0 victory over the Concord (Ga.) Fire Black. The 93 Gold team would wrap up their weekend with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Louisiana 94 ODP select team on Sunday.

The victory on Sunday clinched second place in the bracket as the Jammers posted a 2-1-0 record with a goal differential an even 4-4.

92 Gold Finishes Region III Premier League Season

In their final weekend of Region III action, the 92 Gold team faced off against the nation’s top ranked team, GSA Phoenix out of Georgia.

GSA had defeated previously undefeated and defending national champion Alpharetta Ambush in league play. Earlier in the season the Jammers lost a heart breaker to the Ambush in a 4-3 match.

Playing a high level league schedule on top of the North Carolina High School season had taken its toll on the Jammers who were missing five players due to injuries, leaving the team with just two subs. Still, JSC came out early and nearly took a 1-0 lead when Hunter Mason took a through ball from Andrew Daniel and sent the ball across where Stephen McDaniel’s header glanced over the bar. The Phoenix would respond quickly, calling JSC keeper Stephen Moffitt into action seven times in the opening half. Moffitt was equal to each attempt, leaving the game scoreless at the half.

The second half saw GSA beginning to push forward and create more chances, finally getting on the scoreboard in the 81st minute when a JSC mistake resulted in an own goal. With time running out the Jammers pushed forward and had one final chance when Cody Snow’s throw in from the left side was sent into the box. The ball bounced just right when Mason followed up on the weak side and one timed it into the net to give JSC the equalizer in the 91st minute.

For Jamestown it was a bit of role reversal as the Jammers had fallen to the previously top ranked Ambush 4-3 due to a stoppage time goal.

On Sunday morning the Jammers returned to action against the North Atlanta Soccer Academy’s Elite team. In another physical match the Jammers again had a couple of early opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize. JSC would battle late into the second half but couldn’t put anything away as fatigue set in, leaving the Jammers with a 0-0 draw.

Over the course of a nine game season the Jammers posted a 2-4-3 overall record to end with nine points - good enough to finish in fifth place in the Region. The four losses came to the defending USYS National Champions (4-3 to Alpharetta Ambush), South Carolina State Champion and Regional Semifinalist (1-0 to CESA), the Georgia State Finalist (1-0 to Georgia FC), and to another Regional Semifinalist (4-2 to TFC Navy). Along the way the Jammers were able to defeat State Finalists from Florida and South Carolina (1-0 over SAA Real Madrid & 5-1 over LCSC United) while drawing with the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 teams (1-1 to GSA and 1-1 to Florida Rush).

Following the completion of high school soccer, the team will prepare for their final club season which will include several of the country’s top events including the CASL Showcase, Disney Showcase, TFC Showcase, Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup, Jefferson Cup, and Julian Brown International Showcase.

92 Gold Crowned 2009 US Club National Champions

Another year, another successful season ending run culminating in a National Championship for the 92 JSC Jammers Gold. On Tuesday afternoon in Virginia Beach the 92 Gold capped off an unbeaten four day performance to claim the 2009 US Club U16 Boys Premier National Championship with a 2-0 victory over Blackwatch (N.Y.).

It’s the second year in a row the 92s have claimed a National title, winning the 2008 USYS National Director’s Cup - the club’s first National Crown - in the U15 age group a season ago.

This time the opponents and venue were different, but the story line was similar as JSC’s Justin Jones headed home what would turn out to be the game winning goal just 13 minutes into the match off a cross from Pierce Verchick to give the Jammers a 1-0 lead. A season ago Jones scored the championship match’s only goal around the same time in the second half.

JSC would double their lead, and effectively clinch the club’s second title, at the 58 minute mark when Verchick found Matt Shuster for a one time effort that was deflected by the Blackwatch keeper off the post where Marquez Cassidy was waiting to knock home the rebound. From there it was a matter of counting down the minutes until the celebration started.

"It’s been another great year and I’m very proud of the players," said head coach John Watson. "We came up to this event somewhat shorthanded and battled through to take home a second [national title]. The boys should be very proud of their effort and results. They’ve earned it."

The match with Blackwatch was actually the second time the teams had met at the event - the first being the opening round robin game in which Jones and Verchick reversed roles as finisher and crosser to give the Jammers a 1-0 victory.

The second match gave the Jammers a chance at redemption - facing the Pennsylvania North Stars, a team who had earned a 1-0 victory over JSC in the Regionals. Once again poor marking on a dead ball situation bit the Jammers as the North Stars took an early one goal lead and held it into the final minute before the Jammer attack allowed Andrew Daniel to volley a bouncing ball inside the penalty area into the net with 15 seconds remaining to leave the game 1-1.

With four points after two games, the Jammers could assure themselves a place in the national final with a draw against Coral Springs (Fla) in the final round-robin match. JSC got on the board two minutes into the game when Jason Hill’s 30 yard free kick rocketed into the top corner.

"That was one of the better free kicks I’ve seen at this age. Jason is a high level player who instantly makes our attack dynamic because of his vision and knack for distributing the ball, and, of course, his ability to finish."

After the Floridians earned an equalizer, the Jammers added goals from Verchick and Joey Fiorello to make it 3-1. A late goal from Coral Springs wouldn’t matter as JSC took top of the table placement with a 3-2 victory to finish group play with seven points and a 2-0-1 record. Blackwatch earned a spot in the final by defeating North Stars 1-0 to enter the final with a 2-1 record in group play.

"Our defensive effort was terrific over the entire event starting with our goalkeeper and back four. With the level of play from that group this weekend, we truly felt that once we got a lead we were in a good position no matter what kind of pressure our opponents brought. It’s a great building block for our team and allows us to always feel like we have a chance to win."

With their U16 season now complete, the Jammers will head to the U17 Division of the Disney Soccer Showcase Qualifiers over Labor Day weekend in Orlando before the players shift their focus solely to high school soccer until November.

The 92 Jammers Gold in attendance for this weekend’s event: Stephen Moffitt, Justin Jones, Matt Shuster, Colin Taylor, Evan Mobley, Stephen McDaniel, Bart Toe, Andrew Daniel, Pierce Verhchick, Jimmy Miller, Joey Fiorello, Nathan Hayes, Jason Hill, Parker Lee, Clayton Boozer, Nathaniel Buffong, and Marquez Cassidy.

Westside Pumas 2-0 before posting a pair of 2-2 draws against GSPAA and Hummleville Soccer Club of Eastern Pennsylvania.

After round-robin play the Jammers and GSPAA stood tied atop the standings with identical records while Westside was 1-1-1 and Hummleville was 0-2-1.

The match against Westside was the second time the two teams had met in five weeks, with the Jammers defeating the Pumas 1-0 in the Regional Championships in Columbus, Ga. JSC found the game’s first goal when Jason Hill hit a shot off a cross that bounced around the defense before finding the back of the net. The Pumas would turn up the offensive pressure, peppering JSC goalkeeper Bobby Harrell with 12 shots on the afternoon, but were silenced when Bart Toe broke down the left side before sending the ball across the mouth of the goal to Nick Hastings who one timed the ball into the lower corner.

Against Hummleville the Jammers once again fell behind early in the first half before rallying when Toe poked home a rebound just after halftime followed by Joey Fiorello giving Jamestown a 2-1 lead on a breakaway effort just 10 minutes from the final whistle. A win would have sent JSC into the final regardless of the afternoon match’s result with GSPAA. However a defensive mistake with just five minutes remaining resulted in an own goal, leaving the match 2-2.

A championship rematch with GPSAA Elite within 24 hours of their first match left both coaching staffs with things to think about. In that first meeting, the Maryland based team jumped on JSC 2-0 two minutes into the second half and appeared to be controlling the match. However, the Jammers began to rally when Gray DePasquale headed in a corner kick by PIerce Verchick to cut the lead in half with 25 minutes remaining. Verchick would score the equalizer himself eight minutes later, heading a Nick Hastings corner into the side netting. From there the Jammers would control the match, but could not deliver a game-winning strike.

"We felt like it was an even match the first time," said head coach John Watson. "It was really a tale of two halves. They controlled the first, and we controlled the second. It was a good lesson for the players because it showed they could play with anyone, but the effort has to be the best at all times. At this level nobody is going to give their opponents anything."

Both teams seemed to receive the message and took it to heart as the championship match was highly contentious from the opening whistle. The Jammers had the opening handful of opportunities on goal before GSPAA countered and called Harrell into action five times in the first half. After the teams returned to action, the Jammers finally broke through and put a championship within their grasp 54 minutes into the match. Verchick beat his defender and sent a ball down the left side into the path of a streaking Justin Jones. Jones beat two defenders and then cut back into the middle before hammering the ball into the net to make it 1-0 in what proved to be the game winning sequence.

As the minutes ticked down the energy and excitement from Jones’ goal carried the Jammers until the final whistle came after Carson Poe drilled the ball down the field on a defensive clearance. And then the celebration started, and hasn’t really stopped.

"These boys earned everything they’ve gotten this season," said Watson. "The championship game was a perfect illustration of our season. Justin had been struggling throughout the tournament, but his teammates had helped pick him up to that point. But when we needed him to step up, he did. I told them at halftime that champions make their own luck, and he proved that. This was a great team to work with and I’m grateful for the ride they’ve provided. It’s been a lot of fun since last May, and I’m looking forward to moving forward in the future."

In order to qualify for the National Director’s Cup the Jammers had to win the North Carolina President’s State Cup and the Region III President’s Cup in Columbus, Ga. The North Carolina tournament hosted more than 30 teams ranging from Asheville to Wilmington. The Region III event hosted 12 state cup champions from North Texas, South Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Those three events comprised a 15 match series that saw the Jammers post a 13-0-2 overall record while out-scoring their opponents 39-7. For the season the Jammers posted an overall mark of 36-3-3 and out-scored their opponents 124-28.

The Jammers’ roster consists of Drew Pierce, Justin Jones, William Steffen, Gray DePasquale, Colin Taylor, Evan Mobley, Jose Valencia, Stephen McDaniel, Bart Toe, Andrew Daniel, Pierce Verchick, Nick Hastings, Joey Fiorello, Nathan Hayes, Jason Hill, Tanner Speetjens, Austin Wall, Carson Poe, and Bobby Harrell
