In their first organized action since finishing as runners up at the 2009 Disney Showcase Qualifiers over Labor Day, the 92 Jammers Gold traveled to Raleigh, NC to participate in the state's biggest Showcase event - the CASL Collegiate Showcase. In matches with top competition from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio, the Jammers posted a perfect 3-0-0 record and now prepares to head to the nation's top Showcase event in Orlando in two weeks.
On Friday the Jammers opened play against the Roanoke (Va.) Stars Elite, ranked fifth in the state of Virginia. The Jammers took control early on a 25 yard free kick strike from Evan Mobley that found the top left corner of the goal in the 12th minute of play. JSC would double that lead six minutes later when Tanner Speetjens would head the ball on goal off a corner kick. Despite a great save from the Roanoke defense, Speetjens' second effort was enough to tuck the ball into the side netting to leave the match 2-0 at the half. The second half saw the Stars earn a goal back off a rebound breakaway save by keeper Stephen Moffitt. Just as the match's momentum seemed to be turning away from JSC, Pierce Verchick found Andrew Daniel who immediately fed Bart Toe through the Stars' defense. Toe neatly tucked the ball into the right corner to make it 3-1. Roanoke would push forward, but Moffitt and the Jammer defense would hold steady to allow the team to close out the match with a two goal victory.
Saturday morning came early for the Jammers as they faced off against the Lower Dauphin Soccer Association City Islanders out of Eastern Pennsylvania. LDC entered the match ranked third in their state and 63rd in the country, and had earned positive showings in the Region I League and at last year's Jefferson Cup. Once again Jamestown started strong and went up in the 3rd minute when Toe beat the defender down the left side and played the ball across the goal mouth where Joey Fiorello one-timed the shot into the far corner. The Jammers doubled their lead at the 21 minute mark as Justin Jones threw the ball to the near post where Pierce Verchick found a chance to score a leaping header to make it 2-0. LDC would rally in the second half and establish some measure of control - earning back to back goals within a 15 minute period to make it 2-2 with just 15 minutes remaining. However, the Jammers countered as Andrew Daniel slipped behind the LDC defense off a pass from Verchick to one time the game winner into the net. Keeper Drew Pierce picked up the win while making five saves.
The team would play their third match of the event against the Hammer Classics Premier out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The team entered the match ranked among the top 10 teams in the state of Ohio and had participated in the Midwest Regional League during fall season play. The Jammers would come away with a 1-0 victory on a breakaway goal provided by Toe. Unfortunately the team missed several opportunities to increase the score, but maintained control of the match throughout and allowed Moffitt to earn his first clean sheet of the season.
The Jammers now turn their attentions to the 2009 Disney Soccer Showcase which kicks off in Orlando, Florida from December 27th through December 30th. The Disney Showcase is rated as the nation's top overall recruiting event.
