Four Points For 92 Gold In Region III Openers

The 92 Jammers Gold opened their Region III Premier League schedule over the weekend in Jacksonville (Fla.) with two games against the winners of the last three USYS State Champions from the sunshine state.

On Saturday afternoon the Jammers faced off against SAA Real Madrid out of Miami.  The game started well enough with JSC taking a number of early chances and hitting the post twice.  Real Madrid countered with a three shots on goal that were handled by keeper Stephen Moffitt to leave the halftime score 0-0.

In the 53rd minute the Jammers would pull ahead when Stephen McDaniel broke down the right side on a through ball from Andrew Daniel.  After beating the initial defender, McDaniel sent the ball across goal where Pierce Verchick found the back of the net on a one time finish to make it 1-0.  Moffitt was called into service three more times in the second half, but was equal to each attempt on goal to preserve the clean sheet and give JSC three points.

Sunday's match saw the Jammers face off against two time defending State Champion and Regional Semifinalists Florida Rush.  The Rush entered the match ranked fourth in the nation.  Once again JSC started strong but quickly found themselves in a physical match.  The physicality was intensified by the heat and humidity of the mid-August Florida weather.  Moffit and center back Cody Baker were called into action several times in the opening half, but were able to keep the game scoreless as the teams headed into halftime.

Shortly after halftime the Jammers took the lead when Verchick stole the ball 40 yards from goal and looked up to see the Rush keeper off his line.  The JSC striker beat the defender and lofted the ball over the keeper and into the net to give the Jammers a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.   The goal seemed to energize the Jammers as they continued to push forward for a second goal and nearly got one when Clayton Betts one timed a shot from the left side that forced the Florida keeper to make a strong diving save.  Fatigue and a mental lapse caught up with JSC in the 80th minute when a broken play resulted in Florida winning the ball in the attacking third and lifting the ball over the JSC defense where the striker one timed the volley into the net to equalize for the top five side.

The teams would each have a few chances going forward, but neither could break through and the game ended 1-1.

JSC, currently ranked 31st in the country, will return to action in three weeks in South Carolina when they face two Georgia sides including the nation's second ranked team.
