Jammers Crowned Champions in Richmond

With a weekend off from regular season play, the 93 girls gold traveled to Richmond VA October 10-11th to play in the Columbus day Tournament to get a bit of their swagger back after their first regular season defeat the previous week.

The Ladies faced the MONU Flames in the first match of the day at the brand new Ukrops soccer complex.  Playing on the turf field, the girls  showed their speed and skills in overpowering the Flames en route to a 5-1 win. Jamie Espinola scored 3 goals and assisted with two others.

The second match was against the VAFC Arsenal under the lights. The ladies once again had the run of play scoring often through diagonal passes and finishing strong.  After tallying 5 goals and missing many other opportunities the game ended on a great night winning 5-0.

The next morning we faced the Richmond Kickers South, a team we had beaten in a previous tournament (FCC).  This team had a few guest players added to the roster that made a much different game than the 5-1 win we took in August.  Mallory Jolly got the Jammers scoring started on excellent effort taking a pass from Lindsay Masi, switching to her left foot and knocking a bullet in the net for the 1-0 lead going into the half.  We started sluggishly in the second with both teams starting and stopping repeated attacks.  With 5 minutes left in regulation, there was an unfortunate call that was missed that started a counter attack in our defensive third, the Kickers striker would not be denied on a great upper corner shot to tie the match.  With seconds left in the match the Jammer’s picked up the tempo and through sheer determination Lydia Lewis placed a ball over the top of the Richmond defense and Mallory Jolly netted the game winner with just seconds left, winning the game 2-0 in this championship game.

Jammers Win 2009 FCC Tournament

In late August the 93 Gold played in the Furniture City Classic, and was our big test and preparation for beginning the regular season.  The first team we drew on Saturday pitted the Jammer's against the CRSC Carolina Select Gold.  This team was a very talented team that gave our ladies fits in the first half pounding the ball in our defensive third. After several scoring attempts the ladies used our speed on the outside tallying two goals on counter attacks putting the Jammer's up 2-0 at the half. The second have found the Carolina Select team applying pressure once again on our defense and keeper, however with another quick counter attack, the ladies went up 3-0.  Near the end of regulation we had a brief laps in defense and the Select team put one in ending the game with a 3-1 win for the Jammers.

Game two put the Jammer's against our in town rivals PTFC Black, a division one opponent.  This was a very physical game as our ladies matched up well against this team and have a history of playing them close.  Only 5 minutes into the game a direct kick from 35 yards out put the PTFC team up 1-0.  Soon after, on an overlapping run, the Jammmer's knotted the score on a nicely placed shot from Alex Hill.  The half ended with the score tied 1-1.  The second half saw more intense play from both sides, and with about 15 minutes remaining in the match, Jamie Espinola placed a power shot over the hand of the keeper for a 2-1 lead and final score.  This marked the first time we beat this particular team as many of the players know each other which makes for a great rivalry.

The Sunday semi-final game put the ladies against the Richmond Kickers.  The ladies jumped on this team and used a combination of speed and well timed runs to win easily 5-1.  Claudia Menjivar scored 3 times, aside from allowing one goal, the defense performed very well.  This win put the ladies in the championship game against one of our regular season opponents Triangle Football Club out of the Raleigh area.

In the finals the girls really applied pressure on the attack from the start, scoring 2 goals in the first half, one on nice set play on a corner kick as Claudia Menjivar scored on a brilliant header. We would tally one more goal before the half to take a 2-0 lead.  The second half the Jammers wore down the TFC team scoring 2 more goals en route to a 4-0 championship win.

93 Lady Gold Competes In Northern Va Event

The 93 Lady Jammer's Gold started off their fall 09 campaign playing in the SYSA Cardinal Cup in Northern Virginia.  The team used this as a way to build chemistry as this team was newly formed from two teams brought together during spring tryouts.

The ladies played on a very hot turf field in mid August and faced the host team in our division, the SYSA Freedom a division 3 WAGS team.  From the kick off our team showed their team speed and physical play by beating their opponent 4-0.  After a very brief rest the second match put the Jammer's against a very physical PWSI Courage team another Divion 3 WAGS team that proved to be a good match for us athletically.  After going down 1-0 in the first half the team showed good resilience coming back to tie the match at the half.  The girls came out very aggressive to start the second half scoring quickly then holding off the Courage to win 2-1

The Next morning the Ladies faced a very good BRYC Elite team out of the WAGS league in the semi-finals.  This is a first place division 1 Washington Area team.  The team played them very tight for most of the game however, falling 2-0 in the semi thus ending this run in the tournament.  This was a very good outing for our team, exposing the ladies to good competition and helping to build team chemistry for our next event.
